I was pretty intrigued when I first saw the Cloverfield trailer. At first I thought it was going to be a “War of the Worlds” thing, but then people started talking about the Cloverfield monster, so I thought, uh, Godzilla.
I didn’t catch the first five minutes of the movie (my film teacher in college would say it’s an unforgiveable sin!) but I caught enough to understand the characters’ backstories. Jason is throwing a going away party for his brother Rob who’s leaving for Japan. Rob’s best friend Hud is assigned camera man duty, so the movie is shot from his point of view. (I’d say that if he did this for a living, he wouldn’t have gotten repeat customers or referrals.)
As the party progresses, all of a sudden there’s a huge explosion and tremors. Everyone rushes outdoors and horror of horrors, they see their city being reduced to rubble. As Hud believes it’s important to record everything that goes on, we viewers get dragged along for one hell of a ride as the characters desperately dodge one huge ugly monster, gunfire, debris and unpleasant little buggers to stay alive.
I’m one person who gets dizzy easily, so I was surprised that I managed to sit through the entire movie without looking away from the screen. Yes, it’s that good. I actually went out of the cinema thinking it was more of an experience than it was a movie. Yes, I screamed a lot and kicked at imaginary creepy-crawlies in front of me but no, I didn’t cling to anyone – I had no date. (Everything that Tobie says on Fandom Live’s Cloverfield review is just for marketing purposes.)
And yes, despite the nausea-inducing “handheld camera” effect, I would watch it again on the big screen. Armed with Bonamine, of course.
Cloverfield rocks!
