Cloverfield

I was pretty intrigued when I first saw the Cloverfield trailer. At first I thought it was going to be a “War of the Worlds” thing, but then people started talking about the Cloverfield monster, so I thought, uh, Godzilla.

I didn’t catch the first five minutes of the movie (my film teacher in college would say it’s an unforgiveable sin!) but I caught enough to understand the characters’ backstories. Jason is throwing a going away party for his brother Rob who’s leaving for Japan. Rob’s best friend Hud is assigned camera man duty, so the movie is shot from his point of view. (I’d say that if he did this for a living, he wouldn’t have gotten repeat customers or referrals.)

As the party progresses, all of a sudden there’s a huge explosion and tremors. Everyone rushes outdoors and horror of horrors, they see their city being reduced to rubble. As Hud believes it’s important to record everything that goes on, we viewers get dragged along for one hell of a ride as the characters desp...

New Worlds Alliance launches the country's first online science fiction and fantasy lending library

QUEZON CITY, PHILIPPINES (newworlds.ph) -- Have you ever tried following one of those long-running fantasy book series like Robert Jordan's "The Wheel of Time" or the Dragonlance series? Or have you ever tried reading all the "Star Trek" novels in order but couldn't find the next volume? Tried to keep up with the Star Wars Expanded universe novels?

You've probably tried. But as the venerable Master Yoda would say, "Do or do not, there is no try."

"But Master Yoda," you protest. "I can only try because it's too difficult to find all the books in these series. It's rare to find all 10 Wheel of Time books available in a store, or to find someone with a great number of Star Trek books I can borrow!"

Master Yoda looks at you with a knowing smile and whispers, "Ah, but the New Worlds Library, there is. Know about it, do you not?"

I can see you're quite bewildered. And before Master Yoda decides you have to do a single handstand while he's standing on your f...

Pepper

My mom told me that we would be getting a dachshund puppy, and my sister and I were planning to name her Salami. But when she arrived, we took one look at her and said "Pepperoni, not Salami. Pepper for short."

I bought her dog food, paid for her visits to the vet. Then I moved to Manila when she was a year old, but she never forgot me. Whenever I arrived for vacations, my mom would comment that Pepper acted happier around me. She was my baby, after all.

I'm sorry I didn't pay much attention to her last time I went home during Holy Week. She moved slower (she was really fat and kinda waddled around) and I told my mom Pepper needed exercise. During the last 2 months, she was getting sick a lot. And yesterday, she breathed her last. I could hear my mom sniffling when she called to give me the news.

Rest in peace, dear Pepper. Y...

I love Snape

I got my copy of Book 7 at Fully Booked Bonifacio High Street last Saturday night. I started reading around 10pm and was so engrossed in the book that I didn't realize dawn was already breaking. I finished it at 530am, a little teary-eyed.

I won't post any spoilers, but all I can say is: I love Severus Snape!
Farewell, dear Ricky

I called Ricky last Tuesday afternoon at his office just to say hi, and the girl who answered said that he'd been brought to Medical City. I got worried and called his cellphone. Reitch answered and told me he was in the ICU. And on April 18, we said goodbye forever.

It's Thursday now, and I'm still struggling with the fact that I'll never hear him say "Halloooo" or call me "Pretty girl" again.

Ricky was practically family. I live alone here in Manila, and he was always there when I needed to talk to someone. I remember being unable to sleep over a problem and I called him at 4am and even if he was groggy, he didn't get mad at me. Every time there was a long weekend, he'd text to ask me if I had plans and invite me to join him and Reitch.

He was Broadwall, our pillar of strength: logistics and security chief at Conventions, consultant on protocol, Ringbearer and Bane to Ian's bane. And yet he was Papa Ball too, always ready with a quote from Monty Python, the one who endlessly teased...
